and a few months ago we approached the

ventura botanical gardens about

a wildlife water source on the

botanical gardens property and

the botanical gardens talked with us and

approved the project

and we looked at various sites and

finally selected the site where we

worked today

we began this morning at eight o'clock

so we started working by hand

and had worked down a little maybe a

foot

when we approached a contractor that was

working for the botanical gardens who

had a mini excavator

and once that hole was excavated we

began

refilling with material that had been

broken down

from large clods into smaller pieces so

that we could establish a base

inside the excavation for the water

tank it's a plastic water tank heavy

duty plastic water tank

that collects water during the rainy

season stores that water and allows

wildlife to access the water during the

dry season

and so we put dirt in to

establish the base for it leveled it out

as best we could and then we put in sand

uh to create a level base for the

guzzler

and we then put it in place

our next step will be to get water into

it

we don't expect rain for quite some time

so we want to

get some water into that so wildlife can

become accustomed to where it's located

and start using it

we did see some california or valley

quail

near the guzzler today so they will

undoubtedly start using it

that we've had bobcats mountain lions

coyotes

foxes squirrels

rabbits deer all kinds of wildlife that

use these water sources

there are somewhere between 60 and 80 of

these wildlife water sources

throughout ventura county and on a

little bit into santa barbara county

and san luis obispo and kern counties as well

than 600 Cal Lutheran students removed

plants in Grant Park this is all part of

a partnership with the city of Ventura

that began more than 10 years ago we've

had a lot of community members step up

over the past six months to help us but

this many kids with this much energy

gonna make a huge dent in kind of

getting the park back to where we want

it to be the incoming students are

participating in you got served during

New Student Orientation it's the

university's largest service-learning
