Artist Profile

Barbara Brown

Residence City:

Ventura

Artist Biography:

As a coastal California artist trained in portraiture and figurative painting, plein air is a new direction for me. Spurred by the isolation of Covid and the lack of models, painting outdoors became a great alternative. I have always loved the outdoors and my artwork reflects that connection to the natural world.

I studied painting with F. Scott Hess, John Nava, John Brosio, and Betty Shelton. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and my Master’s Degree from the Laguna College of Art and Design where I subsequently taught.  I have painted in many places throughout the world, including France, the Netherlands, and China. I also had the good fortune to paint in Carmel with plein air artist Randall Sexton, whose work I greatly admire. I am an artist member of the California Art Club.

When I’m not painting, you’ll find me trekking the Ventura Botanical Gardens, planting trees, or engaged in other ways to help keep California beautiful.
